Hereditary Chief Henry Robertson Ga-ba-baawk, known as Hank to many, was born in 1934 and left us on February 23rd, 2016. Lattimer Gallery had represented Henry for nearly thirty years. A cultural and artistic leader amongst the Haisla people, Henry began to carve at age ten and was influenced by his father, carver Gordon Robertson. He carved masks, feast bowls, and totem poles. Henry especially enjoyed carving large-scale totem poles, and he carved a totem pole for the Aboriginal Friendship Centre in Vancouver, BC. He was also responsible for the Aboriginal Pavilion at the PNE in Vancouver from 2004-2006. He was also a member of the Haisla Totem Pole Repatriation Project, and was featured in the NFB documentary Totem: The Return of the G’psgolox Pole. Henry's nephews are Haisla artists Derek Wilson, Gary Wilson, and Barry Wilson, and he has influenced them in their work. He taught and influenced numerous artists along the Northwest Coast - including the young Haisla artist featured below, Nathan Wilson - and his contributions will be sorely missed.

Bentwood boxes, poles, and masks have long been created for both cultural and artistic purposes, but decorative panels only began emerging in the 1990s. One explanation for this development lies in the fact that paintings on paper and canvas, which are pervasive in conventional art galleries, are not common within the Northwest Coast market. Carved and painted panels are a fusion of traditions: wall-mounted compositions created through carving. From the traditional to the bright and modern, Lattimer Gallery has several outstanding panels right now:

Heiltsuk artist Dean Hunt’s Hzí (Frog) Bounce is a playful 36” diameter panel comprised of light and dark greens. Representing a frog in motion, the figure appears as though it could hop right out of the wood due to the depth Dean achieved by dropping all of the negative space down by ½”. This animated sculpture is available for $6,000.00 CAD.
Tsimshian/Cree artist Phil Gray’s rectangular red cedar panel depicting two killerwhales is titled Gestation and measures 48” x 24” x 1 ¾”. Representing a mother orca and newborn orca, this deeply-carved panel contains a great amount of movement and tension. Two human figures can also be seen within this clever composition. Phil’s panel is available for $8,000.00 CAD.
Haida artist Corey Bulpitt has carved a red cedar panel titled Skaana (Killerwhale) that strongly demonstrates his tendency to create designs that extend beyond strict formline composition. This piece contains all of the classic elements of a whale design in plain oiled cedar – the head, blowhole, tail flukes – yet the dorsal fin has been superimposed across the entire composition in black and red paint. Corey’s 36” round panel is available for $6,000.00 CAD.
The details within this 36” diameter panel are delightful. From the knife-finished bevelled edge to the carefully domed ovoids, this piece demonstrates Rande’s talent as both a carver and designer. Unlike many representations of the mythical Thunderbird, Rande’s appears serene with its closed beak, small horns, and tucked talon. Rande’s panel is available for $6,000.00 CAD.
Iconic Kwakwaka'wakw carver Charlie James was his great-great-great grandfather and his great uncle was prolific totem pole carver Mungo Martin. In addition, his grandmother was Ellen Neel, the first professional full-time female First Nations artist in British Columbia.
David was born in 1960 and he apprenticed with Beau Dick and Wayne Alfred between 1987 and 1989. In both 1987 and 1988, Neel earned the Mungo Martin Memorial Award. In 1991, Canada Council Explorations provided him with a grant for his Contemporary Mask Series. The Smithsonian Institution awarded him a Community Scholar Grant in 1992. His photography resulted in two books about Native culture: Our Chiefs and Elders in 1992 and The Great Canoes in 1995. Like some of his prints and masks, these also dealt with contemporary First Nations history. He recently created an intriguing cedar mask for us titled The Grizz Who Looked Back at Me. Designed as a three-quarter profile mask rather than a frontal/symmetrical mask, this piece has a dynamism that many Northwest Coast First Nations masks lack.
Nathan said about this mask: "During a mid-April hunting trip, I was some 40km up the upper Kitamaat River valley. It had been a very uneventful day until I came to the top of a small hill. Out of nowhere, a large male Grizzly stood up from is resting spot on the side of the road! I stopped dead in my tracks as my brain was trying to process what was no more than 50 yards in front of me. He didn't seem to mind my presence, so over the course of an hour I followed him (at a safe distance, of course). Many times he stopped and looked back at me and I knew at some point I had to carve a mask of him. The experience has left me with a deeper appreciation for these animals and how intimidating a large Grizzly can be..."
Lattimer Galleryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03616369513732680690noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6506274125771212918.post-73840669686980127272015-05-11T09:08:00.000-07:002015-05-11T09:08:00.579-07:00Rocky Mountaineer 25th Anniversary

Lattimer Gallery has been selected to provide a variety of corporate gifts for Vancouver's Rocky Mountaineer. Rocky Mountaineer, Canada's premiere train tour operator, is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2015 and decided that Northwest Coast Native artwork would be the perfect way to acknowledge staff contributions, and to celebrate this milestone. One of the works that Rocky Mountaineer commissioned through Lattimer Gallery was a striking double-sided Red Cedar paddle carved by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Ross Henderson. Complete with Rocky Mountaineer's logo, this exquisite paddle depicts Eagle and Bear:

In addition to this incredible paddle, we also facilitated the completion of 60 custom steam-bent Red Cedar boxes by Metis/Cree artist, James Michels. Depicting both Frontal Bear and Split Eagle designs in traditional red and black, each bentwood box also sported Rock Mountaineer's logo on the lid. Lattimer Gallery frequently completes custom corporate orders such as this:

Rocky Mountaineer has been awarded the "World's Leading Travel Experience by Train" at the World Travel Awards seven times for its Gold Leaf service, has been listed among the "World's Top 25 Trains" since 2005 by The Society of International Railway Travelers, and was recognized by National Geographic Magazine as one of the "World’s Best Journeys" in 2007.

Sharifah is an Anishinaabe artist from the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation in Ontario who has been living in Vancouver for the past fifteen years, and she strives to fuse her cultural roots with Northwest Coast forms. As her first solo show, Sharifah Marsden - Miigwetch features jewellery pieces created over the past two years during the artist’s studies at the Vancouver Metal Arts School. The word 'miigwetch' means 'thank you' in the Ojibwe language. Under the instruction of European goldsmith Gerold Mueller, Sharifah has learned hollow form jewellery design and stone-setting, processes she has added to her existing arsenal of hand-engraving techniques.

Lattimer Gallery regularly works with customers to facilitate commissions. While we always carry a great selection of fine art in our gallery, people often order special pieces to meet particular needs and spaces. A good client of ours commissioned young Kwakwaka’wakw artist Clinton Work to design and engrave a matching set of solid 22k gold cuff bracelets this spring. Titled Eternal Love, this bracelet design depicts two interlocking wolves, a ghost figure to represent ancestors and love lost, and a human figure to represent future generations and familial bonds. Similar to most of his work, Clint has cropped all of these elements to provide each cuff with a contemporary design. This cropping also draws the eye in, as these are not typical Northwest Coast crest figures. After these pieces were shaped and carved in the round, Clint then hand-stippled all of the flat surfaces, a time-consuming finishing technique that provided the cuffs with a truly sculptural look.

Lattimer Gallery featured the work of talented Coast Salish artist Cody Lecoy in our Fall 2013 newsletter, and since that time Cody has developed his style and received a YVR Art Foundation Scholarship. This March, we commissioned a painting from Cody, which enabled him to work through the process of completing a custom order. From the initial study in graphite to the finished painting, Cody updated us on his creative process through the entire project. The result - a colourful and surreal 24” x 48” painting titled Resurgence - was fantastic, and this piece is currently available for $1,200.00 CAD. The image below is just a small detail from this large composition. Lattimer Gallery frequently facilitates commissions, and we encourage our clients to contact us for any custom projects they have in mind.

Throughout the 15 years I have lived in Vancouver, I have been active in the Native arts community, working in Native art galleries, attending Native arts programs, and connecting with other First Nations artists. The strong influence of Northwest Coast formline has influenced how I have chosen to develop my personal style, and my artistic practice. As I studied and was witness to the creations of the Northwest Coast, I was forced to analyze my own art, in the Anishinaabe style. Through the development of my own style, while living and growing here, I came to create my own sense of formline, within the Anishinaabe tradition. - Sharifah Marsden
Established Northwest Coast Native artist Kelvin Thompson recently created a masculine hand-engraved ring for a client of ours as an homage to the Seattle Seahawks. Considering the Seahawks logo is actually based upon a historical Northwest Coast Native mask that currently resides in Maine's Hudson Museum, it is not a stretch to see this hawk design applied to a piece of jewellery.

Kelvin created this bold ring by first hand-engraving and cutting out the head of the figure. The head of the seahawk was then soldered onto the sterling silver band. Then, the band was painstakingly stippled, the texture perhaps an allusion to the cheering of the 12th Man. As the final touch, a faceted iolite stone was bead-set in the eye of the bird. This stone is a dark blue colour; a reference to the Seattle Seahawks logo and team colours.

Kelvin carves jewellery in silver and gold, but also creates bowls and masks from alder, maple and cedar. In 1979, he studied under and worked with Barry and Derek Wilson at the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre, and in 1980 carved a totem pole with Henry Robinson for the Friendship Centre. He has been adopted into Henry's Haisla family. From oxidizing to intricate cut-out work, Kelvin is always experimenting and trying new things with his jewellery. In addition, he has taught many artists how to carve in silver and gold, and he is passionate about passing skills and information on to younger carvers. From September, 2007 to February, 2008 Kelvin aided Kwakwaka’wakw/Haida artist Dan Wallace in teaching the first annual Northwest Coast Jewellery Arts Program, which was held at Vancouver’s Native Education College. In 2009, Kelvin was commissioned to engrave five cuff bracelets for James Taylor, Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, Elton John, and Vicki Gabereau for the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation fundraiser 'An Evening with Diana Krall'.

It's that time of year again, when Lattimer Gallery gears up for the numerous custom wedding band orders that we receive for weddings that take place during the spring and summer. Ordering custom rings through Lattimer Gallery allows you to select a band that is entirely unique and that meets your particular needs. In terms of material, we work with a wide selection of First Nations artists who use everything from copper and platinum to silver and white gold. In terms of design, you can select a conventional crest figure - such as the raven or wolf - or you can request something less traditional. And in terms of shape, you can request your ring to be flat so it sits flush against your finger, or domed so it has a slight curve and creates a comfort fit.
We have facilitated custom ring orders for over 25 years and always have a large number of artists to work with. We recently worked with Kwakwaka'wakw/Tlingit artist Corrine Hunt on a pair of white gold wedding bands. Both customers loved Corrine's work, but one partner wanted a figurative symbol while the other partner wanted a more modern design. They decided Eagle was the most appropriate symbol for them, so one partner ordered a standard band and the other requested Corrine create a ring with a scalloped edge. The result was fantastic.
Wedding band orders from most artists take between 4-6 weeks. Lattimer Gallery requires a deposit of 50% of the estimated total to get orders started, but we have an open exchange policy and flexible return policy. If our customers are not 100% satisfied with their orders after they come in, we simply refund all deposits. Custom Northwest Coast Native wedding rings are the perfect way to represent this part of the world and to own a truly unique band that will last a lifetime. A wide selection of rings and ring styles can be found on our website: www.lattimergallery.com

Almost everyone who visits Vancouver for the first time comments on the beautiful artwork in our airport. The setting of YVR has always been picturesque, but in 1993 the Vancouver Airport Authority decided to make the inside of this travel hub as attractive as its exterior and surroundings. It was during this year that the Vancouver Airport Authority established the YVR Art Foundation, which is a separate entity dedicated to fostering the development of BC First Nations art and artists. The YVRAF supports the design, purchase, and commissioning of artworks to celebrate BC’s cultural heritage and sense of place, many of which are integrated into the airport’s architecture. This is a unique approach to running and decorating an international airport, and there are very few airports in the world that have made such a commitment to the cultures within which they are situated.

In 2004, the Foundation created an Art Scholarship & Awards Program in collaboration with corporate donors to provide scholarships to BC First Nations youth who wish to develop their artistic potential. Since 2004, the Foundation has awarded approximately $200,000 to over 40 young artists. In 2014, the Foundation also started to offer Mid-Career Artist Scholarships.

Applications for the YVRAF scholarships are usually due every January and information about the application process can be found here: http://www.yvraf.com/programs Lattimer Galleryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03616369513732680690noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6506274125771212918.post-65750613797847942942015-01-11T15:04:00.000-08:002015-01-11T15:04:02.886-08:00Phil Gray Bear Mother Pole

Lattimer Gallery has always prided itself on great customer service. So, when American clients of ours purchased Tsimshian/Cree artist Phil Gray's seven-foot Bear Mother totem pole in early January - and requested that we help deliver it and install it - we were happy to oblige.

The first step involved lowering the pole and preparing it for shipping here in the gallery. We wrapped it with moving blankets and got our dolly ready. The second step was loading the pole and driving across the border. The final step was unloading the pole, carefully carrying it into the client's home, and then installing it. This beautiful pole looked perfect in the space provided, just like it was meant to be there!

This sculptural pole depicts the Bear Mother legend from Northwest Coast Native mythology. There are various versions of this story, but a common telling can be found here:

There are many variations of the Bear Mother story. One such story tells of a young woman who is berry picking in the forest with friends, when she accidentally steps into a pile of bear dung. Reacting in disgust, she makes a rude comment about bears. The bears overhear and resent this insulting remark. The woman keeps stopping to repair the broken strap of her berry-picking basket and is separated from her friends. Two young men, actually a bear prince and his companion, offer to escort the woman out of the forest. Instead, they take her to their family's home where she is made welcome. In time, she marries the bear prince and gives birth to two cubs. Her human family, however, have never stopped searching for her. Each of her four brothers tries in turn to save her. The youngest brother finally succeeds in killing her husband. The woman and her two sons, now transformed into their human form, return to the village. Many First Nations people from the West Coast who hold Bear as their crest symbol connect their lineage to this myth, which warns against impetuousness.

Phil Gray began carving in 1999 with Salish artist, Gerry Sheena. He also had the opportunity to study Advanced Design under acclaimed Haida artist, Robert Davidson. Phil works primarily in cedar, alder and boxwood. He creates masks, panels, poles, sculptures and drums. Phil belongs to the Killerwhale Clan and the majority of his works are created in his traditional Tsimshian style. In September of 2003, Phil had three of his pieces donated to the Burke Museum in Seattle. In 2005, Phil was featured in the 'Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 2' exhibit at the Museum of Art and Design in New York. In the winter of 2007, Phil completed a large commission of sculptural works for Sonora Resort on Sonora Island, BC. Also in 2007, Phil completed the Northwest Coast Jewellery Arts Program at the Native Education College in Vancouver, under Kwakwaka’wakw/ Haida artist, Dan Wallace. Phil was included in two major exhibitions in 2009. The first was the 'Challenging Traditions' exhibition at Ontario's McMichael Gallery, a show that was dedicated to exploring innovative and experimental works from the Northwest Coast. The second was 'Continuum: Vision and Creativity on the Northwest Coast' at Vancouver's Bill Reid Gallery, which highlighted 23 established Aboriginal artists from BC, Washington State and Alaska. In September of 2009, Phil completed a pair of large red cedar doors here in Lattimer Gallery, which depicted a 'Grandmother Moon' design. In February of 2010, Phil designed the helmet of gold medal-winning Skeleton racer, Jon Montgomery. Montgomery held Phil's helmet throughout the Olympic awards ceremony. In 2014, Phil was awarded a BC Creative Achievement Award in Aboriginal Art from the Government of British Columbia.

Throughout the month of September, Gwaai Edenshaw was artist in residence at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, England. Gwaai and his brother Jaalen were at the Pitt Rivers to study a large nineteenth-century bentwood Haida chest that the museum has had in its collection for many decades. This chest is considered to be one of the best examples of early Haida formline, so Gwaai and his brother were there to both study the piece and to create a replica box. This replica is set to come to British Columbia, so future artists and fans of Northwest Coast art can admire this complex work.

Gwaai said the following about this great Haida masterwork: "Boxes are a good study of Haida formline. They follow a certain set of conventions and they can easily be compared. It is clear that the artist was a true master, exceptionally well versed in in the form. This single box has many innovations that we thought belonged to our modern day greats - an exciting, and humbling discovery. In addition, there are deviations from the norm contained in the form line."

At Lattimer Gallery, the past seven holiday seasons have begun with an exciting Charity Bentwood Box Silent Auction, with each year’s donations surpassing the last. What begins as a blank cedar bentwood box is transformed into a beautiful work of art, all in the name of charity. Three years ago, we were pleased to announce a three-year partnership with the Urban Native Youth Association, a Vancouver organization which has been providing 21 prevention-focused programs and services to Native youth since 1988. Last year, we decided to assign 100% of all donations from our charity auctions to UNYA for the foreseeable future. Last year was by far our most successful year to date, with $38,909 being raised for UNYA. As of 2013, we have raised over $100,000 for Aboriginal organizations through this one event and we hope that our customers and matching partners will continue to help support this worthy cause.

Most of the figures depicted in First Nations art from the West Coast are family crest symbols which are common throughout British Columbia and Washington State. The orca, the bear, the raven...these are all animal figures that appear again and again in Northwest Coast art and jewellery. Below are meanings behind some of the more obscure representations in our exhibition From the Depths:

Clam
Clam represents creation. Raven discovered the first humans in a large clamshell, and clams proliferate all along the Northwest Coast. In art, they are often personified and shown with small human faces.

Eulachon
Eulachon represents wealth and plenty. Also referred to oolichan and candlefish, this tiny fish from the smelt family is plentiful in BC and is valued as both a fuel and food source. Eulachon oil was and still is highly prized within many First Nations communities, and was an important trade item.

Dean Hunt's Sterling Silver Eulachon Bracelet

Humpback Whale
Humpback whales represent communication and unity. While the orca is a crest symbol within many Northwest Coast cultures, baleen whales are not common as family crests. Having said this, gray and humpback whales are common along the West Coast, and whales in general are very vocal and look out for one another by traveling in pods.

Jellyfish
Jellyfish represents flexibility and acceptance. Common within the Pacific along the coast, the jellyfish floats instead of swims, and is carried where ever the current takes it. Although the jellyfish is soft and adaptable, it can also sting and defend itself when necessary.

Octopus
Octopus represents transformation. Commonly referred to as Devilfish, the Octopus is a secondary crest figure but is central to many myths along the Northwest Coast. The Octopus has close links to shamanism and transformation symbolism due to its ability to change colour and shape.

Gus Cook's Octopus and Dzunukwa Repousse Pendant

Sea Snag
Sea Snag represents responsibility and protection. It is a supernatural figure common within Haida culture associated with Sea Bear and Sea Wolf, symbols linked to the beginnings of the world and the formidableness of the ocean. Sea Snag is the personification of driftwood or deadheads.

Sea Wolf
Also referred to as Wasgo, the Sea Wolf is a supernatural figure associated with the mystique and power of the ocean. As Thunderbird represents the prodigiousness of the sky, Sea Wolf represents the vastness of the sea. This creature is often shown with the head and tail of a wolf, with whale elements such as fins and a blowhole.

Seal
Seals represent wealth and plenty. They have always been an important resource along the Northwest Coast, providing food, fuel, and clothing. Seal is often depicted with salmon, as this is a favourite food, and both creatures represent abundance.

Kelvin Thompson's Seal Hunt Bracelet

Sisiutl
Sisiutl represents duality. It is a double-headed sea serpent that can flip boats and deal death, or bestow power and protect communities. Often depicted horizontally with a humanoid head in the middle with two wolf-like heads on either end, this mythological figure often appears in the art of British Columbia’s southern First Nations cultures.

Sturgeon
Sturgeon represents mystery and wonder. Known to many Indigenous cultures as Monster Fish and ruler of freshwater estuaries and rivers, the sturgeon is a massive and slow-moving species that can grow to weigh up to 4000 lbs. They are identified by their pointed nose, long body, and whiskers.

Turtle
Turtle represents the land and continuity. It is not a symbol found within Northwest Coast art and culture, but the turtle is a central figure with Plains and Woodlands mythology. Turtle is associated with creation in Plains and Woodlands culture.

In 2012, Lattimer Gallery held a jewellery exhibition titled
Barnacles to Butterflies: Unusual Silver Jewellery which featured over twenty pieces depicting atypical animal
symbols found within Northwest Coast Native art. Last year, we organized a show
titled Silver Linings: Jewellery from the
Open Sky which provided artists with the opportunity to create works based
on a broad theme. From copper storm cloud earrings to an intergalactic silver
cuff bracelet, artists came up with some astounding concepts and artwork,
making the show a hit. We have organized another themed jewellery show for
2014, titled From the Depths: Jewellery

Many traditional family crests found within First
Nations communities in the Pacific Northwest have their roots in the ocean.
Figures such as the orca, seal, and salmon are often represented in Northwest
Coast art, but we have requested artists to delve deeper into the symbolism
found within their cultures. We have asked them to be completely open with
their creativity, and they have delivered. Featuring the work of Shawn Edenshaw

Also known as Tokwit, this female figure is featured in the Kwakwaka’wakw’s War Spirit dance ceremonies.
Tokwit is a girl, and she represents the power of the Kwakwaka’wakw people. One
legend of Tokwit involves a ceremonial dance hosted by the Kwakwaka’wakw, to
which other cultures were invited. The Kwakwaka’wakw dancers bring Tokwit out
and, through illusion and the darkness of night, pretend to decapitate her. A
carved wooden head in her likeness is thrown out into the crowd, to scare the
spectators, and then collected by the dancers. Later in the evening, Tokwit
re-emerges, with a red line around her neck, and all of the guests are in awe
over the apparent powers of the Kwakwaka’wakw people to reanimate the dead.

In Northwest Coast art, Tokwit is often
represented as a young female painted entirely red, an allusion to this frightening
legend of magic and deception. She also often sports a black beauty mark on her
cheek. In this sculpture by Beau, Tokwit is standing behind a mortuary box containing a skeleton, representing both her ability to avoid death and the Kwakwaka'wakw Nation's ingenuity. This mysterious work measures 17" x 5 1/2" x 11" and is available for $4,000.00 CAD.

Legacy Gallery in Seattle, are coming together to help an amazing artist
and friend who has been working with all of us for many years. Val Malesku is currently struggling financially after dealing with a long
term illness that culminated this winter in an intense and brutal
life-saving surgery.

There are three ways to help support Val.

First, there is an online auction that is open now until July 27th.
Artists and galleries have donated items, and the proceeds will go
directly towards Val's medical expenses. The auction page can be found
here: www.myminiauction.com/thevalfund.

Second, this fundraising effort will conclude with an event at
Vancouver's Bill Reid Gallery on July 27th. Running between 2:30pm-4:00pm, this event
will allow guests to place last-minute bids and meet with the artist
herself.

The third way to donate is through the galleries that will be taking
donations via credit card or cheque, with all proceeds going directly to
Val. We can't offer a tax receipt but to show her gratitude for your
support, any person donating $100 or more will receive a sterling silver pendant and chain that Val has made. Any person donating $250 or more will receive an individual Salmon Egg
print, measuring 7 1/2” x 7 1/2” with the number of the edition to be
determined by the number of donors. You can donate in-person at any of
the three participating galleries or at the silent auction on the 27th.
Val
has been living on Haida Gwaii since the 1970's. She has been a carver
and painter and began working in silver and gold in 1981. Val
apprenticed with Bill Reid. Her unique designs combine the classic with
contemporary in Cree and Northwest Coast styles. In 2013, Val released
her first limited edition print. In 2014, she released two open edition
prints. We encourage you to contact us by email, phone, or in person if you have any questions or requests. David's crests are Thunderbird and Killerwhale. He comes from a family
that is rich in history and artistic skill. His father is Dave Neel Sr,
his great uncle is acclaimed artist Mungo Martin, his great-great-great
grandfather is Charlie James, and his grandmother is artist Ellen Neel.
His widely exhibited work includes: jewellery, masks, drums, poles,
original paintings, limited edition prints, glass etching, regalia, and
photos (appearing in several magazines). David's formal training in Fine
Arts was at the University of Kansas and at Mount Royal College,
Alberta. Following a career as a professional photographer in Texas,
David returned to Canada in the early 1990s and conceived two important
projects: one documenting works and images of First Nations elders, and
the other promoting the revival of the Northwest Coast great dugout
canoe. David's talents are diverse, and he is dedicated to promoting and
preserving his Kwakwaka'wakw heritage.

Reflecting the artist's personal crests - Gisgaast (Fireweed) and Frog - this intriguing cuff bracelet depicts Volcano Woman. Volcano Woman is a mythological figure who originates from Northern BC and Haida Gwaii. She is a symbol of the land and is closely associated with Frog, who acts as her familiar and communicates her messages. In one myth, Volcano Woman materializes and destroys an entire village over the senseless killing of a single frog. She is a maternal figure, but she is also a powerful and often vengeful figure too.

In this wide cuff by Gitxsan jeweller Phil Janze, Volcano Woman is facing forward, identified through her labret and lava tears. Frogs form at the ends of the tears, connecting her to nature and all forest creatures. Her hands are presented palms up, perhaps communicating a warning to those who needlessly harm the natural world. The ends of this stunning bracelet are decorated with a floral fireweed motif. Fireweed is often abundant in wet and acidic soils and is found in open fields, pastures, and particularly burned-over lands; the name "Fireweed" derives from the species' abundance as a coloniser on burnt sites after forest fires. This connection to fire and lava adds depth to the symbolism behind the cuff. It measures 5 3/4" long by 1 1/2" wide and is priced at $3,500.00 CAD.

Phil began working in metal at age 13, later graduated from B.C.I.T. and was invited to the jewellery program at Goldsmith's Hall in England. His many widely exhibited/published works include: silkscreen prints, carvings, totem poles, masks, and gold and silver repousse jewellery. Phil was recognized by the Canadian Jeweller's Challenge in 1982-84 for creating one of six finest pieces in Canada. He is the only Aboriginal artist to have accomplished this, to date. Phil also won top prize in jewellery making from the Indian Northern Affairs Canada Purchase Show in 1984. In 1989, he made a 34" round copper Sun mask using the repousse technique. This was the first large-scale repousse sculpture to ever be created in contemporary Native art. In 2012, Phil received the British Columbia Creative Achievement Award for his artistic contributions. He is represented in public and corporate collections in Canada, U.S.A., Europe and Japan, and is acknowledged as a master of Northwest Coast Art.

Cree artist Val Malesku has been active in the Northwest Coast Native art market for more than 30 years. Best known for her distinctive hand-filed silver and gold formline jewellery, Val has a broad skill set and has been deeply involved in Haida culture and ceremony for decades. From designing button blankets to helping produce regalia, Val has always applied her creativity to a wide variety of media. In 2012, Val won an award through Vancouver International Airport and was commissioned to create a series of street banners that lined the streets heading to the airport. Later in 2012, Val produced her first limited edition print. This print, titled Salmon Eggs Unleashed, was a Northwest Coast interpretation of a pattern scheme made famous by British artist, Damien Hirst.

In 2014, Val is continuing along this path and has produced two open edition giclée prints. A giclée is a form of high quality digital printing that allows artists to produce works with a depth and dynamism that is often difficult to attain through serigraphy. The first print that she produced this year is titled Spring Salmon, and the second print is titled Summer Salmon. Both prints measure 13" tall by 16" long and are hand-signed by the artist. In addition, both prints are retailing for $30.00 CAD and can be purchased through our sister site, Native Art Prints.

Take a look at the above photo. This is a Northwest Coast Native cuff bracelet, comprised of 14k yellow gold overlaid atop sterling silver. Many cuffs like this can be seen in galleries and museums along the West Coast, but they are presented to the public as perfect and polished works of art. Few people truly understand all of the labour and precision involved with producing a high quality hand-engraved piece of jewellery. Lattimer Gallery recently used the commission of the above cuff bracelet by Ojibway/Haisla artist Kelvin Thompson as an opportunity to document and share the way in which such a piece is created.

First, a design is sketched by the artist. This sketch is then carbon transferred to the metal. After the basic outline of the design has been transferred to the silver or gold, the artist uses gravers to incise these lines.

Second, the design needs to be fleshed out and given dimension. Texture and depth are created through the process of engraving with chisels and gouges. In addition to providing the piece with dimension through the removing of metal, Northwest Coast Native artists often indicate negative space through the use of crosshatching. This criss-crossing pattern helps the primary figures in the design stand out.

Third, cuff bracelets are often shaped, polished, and then buffed before they are brought to the marketplace. Some of the West Coast's more experienced artists incorporate overlay and cut-outs before shaping and finishing their works. For the bracelet depicted here, Kelvin has cut-out and filed the negative space, instead of crosshatching it. These cut-outs are made into the 14k yellow gold.

Fourth, the edges are cleaned up and the top layer is flipped onto the bottom layer when an overlay bracelet is being made. The top layer is then painstakingly soldered to the base layer.

Fifth, excess metal from the overlay process is trimmed and final embellishments are applied. You can see here that Kelvin has engraved extra lines in the head and wings of the Eagle, and he has started to meticulously decorate the border of the bracelet with a single-hatch pattern.

Finally, the cuff is shaped and finished. Most standard cuffs and overlay bracelets are buffed and polished, but Kelvin has yet again taken this piece one extra step by chemically oxidizing the base silver layer. Oxidization, often achieved through the use of liver of sulphur, turns silver black, and all raised areas are polished. This results in recessed areas remaining dark, which emphasizes the depth of the piece and helps the design stand out.

Lattimer Gallery received two new steam-bent boxes from Kwakwaka'wakw artist Clint Work this week. Both boxes represent Clint's acute attention to detail, and his cheeky sense of humour.

The first box is titled Cold Feet. It represents a dowry box, a gift that would commonly be given by one partner to another near the time of a formal wedding ceremony. These boxes would typically be finely carved and very valuable. This particular box is indeed finely carved, but a closer inspection will reveal that the lid has been left incomplete. A groove has been incised on each side, indicating that the lid was about to be carved out into a traditional "seat" shape, but the gift-giver stopped working before the box was complete. Perhaps it will be a long engagement. This charming box measures 5" x 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" and is available for $750.00 CAD.

The second box is titled Tempting. Clint has gone to great efforts to carefully carve and tie-up this red and yellow bentwood box. It looks as though it contains something, and has contained something for some time. If you pick it up, you quickly realise that there is, indeed, something inside. It makes a quiet rattle, and rolls around inside of the box irregularly. Tempted to find out what it is? This box is retailing for $1,350.00 CAD, and it measures 7 1/2" x 7" x 7".

Bentwood boxes are unique to the Northwest Coast First Nations peoples of British Columbia. Traditionally, bentwood boxes were used for symbolic and practical purposes. The large chests with elaborate designs were often presented to honored guests during feasts or potlatches. They were also used as burial boxes for ancestors. More simply designed boxes were used for storage of clothing and household items, for transporting goods, cooking and to display important carvings. The design represented the clans and showed the rank, social status, individual wealth and spiritual power of the owner. They also portrayed legends or events in history. These boxes were prized by families and passed down to succeeding generations.

The ‘kerfing’ or bending form is made by selection of a thin, tight grained plank of red or yellow cedar. The wood is divided into four sections by carving a groove halfway through at the corners. The cedar plank is steamed, and then folded to form the four sides. The open ends are pegged together, the bottom piece is pegged to the side, and a lid is then tightly fitted over the top. The box is then carved and or painted. <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>
