During the recent Vancouver 2010 Olympics, representatives from the German Saxony House and Alert Bay's U'Mista Cultural Centre announced exciting plans for a major exhibition exchange. Saxon State Ethnographical Collections (SES) and U'Mista are jointly coordinating the exhibition project 'The Great Potlatch' which highlights the history of the Kwakwaka’wakw potlatch. Both organizations have agreed to exchange numerous pieces from their collections for the exhibition and present it at both venues simultaneously.
As the first exchange of its kind involving Northwest Coast Native art, this cooperative venture will be on display in Alert Bay between July-October, 2011. While this may seem like a long way off, it is definitely something to mark on the calendar!
