Vancouver Art Gallery's newest exhibition, Beat Nation: Art, Hip Hop and Aboriginal Culture, has had an enormous positive response from the public since it's opening on February 25, 2012. The exhibit brings together 27 Aboriginal artists together from across North America, and focuses on Aboriginal experiences in urban and hiphop culture through a combination of First Nations visual and performance arts. Some contemporary artists featured in the exhibition include Skeena Reece, (Tsimshian, Gitksan, Metis and Cree), Sonny Assu (Kwakwa'wakw), Corey Bulpitt (Haida) and Dylan Miner (Metis). Through their work, these artists explore past and current cultural and political issues that have shaped their experiences as Aboriginal peoples. A diverse playlist of hip hop, electronica and traditional music is played throughout the gallery, serving to enhance and link the works in the exhibit.
The exhibition will continue at the Vancouver Art Gallery until June 30, 2012.
