We would like to extend our congratulations to
Tlingit/Tahltan artist Dempsey Bob for being appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada by Governor General David Johnston. This highly esteemed award
recognizes his outstanding dedication to the preservation of Tahltan-Tlingit artistry as a master carver and mentor to a new generation of artists. Dempsey Bob has been carving for over forty years and his works are
included in prestigious collections around the world, including UBC's Museum of
Anthropology and the Smithsonian Institution. He is committed to fostering and supporting
artists at the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art, where he has been a
senior advisor since its inception in 2006.
Dempsey Bob joins Northwest Coast artists Earl Muldon (Gitksan), Susan Point (Coast Salish) and Walter Harris (Gitskan) in receiving an Officer of the Order of Canada appointment.
