Calvin Hunt Canoe to Carry Olympic Torch

Kwakwaka'wakw artist Calvin Hunt recently completed a 38-foot seafaring canoe, which is on display at UBC's Museum of Anthropology until December 13, 2009. While Calvin is from Vancouver Island, he created this long-tail canoe in the Tlingit style, and finished some of the work on it at MOA. It was recently announced that this canoe will also carry the Olympic torch on February 2, 2010. It will sail the torch across the bay at Port Hardy, as the torch makes its way to Vancouver for the 2010 Olympics. The display at MOA is interesting because it explains how Northwest Coast canoes are created, and it explains how canoes are made according to the bodies of water in which they sail.

Calvin is enjoying great success these days, as he was also one of the artists to receive a 2009 BC Creative Achievement Award (see blog posting below).
